Grandparent Stories Prompts

When a grandparent shares a story, they’re passing on more than memories—they’re passing on faith, values, and a sense of belonging that children carry for a lifetime. These Grandparent Stories Prompts are designed to help generations slow down, listen deeply, and celebrate how God has been at work across the years, turning ordinary moments into a beautiful legacy of His faithfulness.

Here are five ways to use these prompts:

  • Set aside a special “Grandparent Story Night” and let kids take turns choosing questions to ask.

  • Record audio or video while a grandparent answers one or two prompts, creating a keepsake library over time.

  • Use a prompt to start a letter, email, or voice message from a grandparent to a grandchild.

  • Bring a few prompts to family gatherings or holidays and let each grandchild pick one to ask at dessert.

  • Turn answers into a simple “Grandparent Story Book” by writing them down, adding photos, and gifting copies to the next generation.

  1. If your childhood had a soundtrack, what three “songs” or sounds would be on it, and why?

  2. Tell us about a time God answered a prayer in a way that completely surprised you.

  3. What is a rule your parents had that you didn’t like then but are grateful for now?

  4. If you could freeze one ordinary day from your younger years and replay it for us, what would we see?

  5. Describe a time you felt like you were standing at a crossroads—how did you sense God guiding you?

  6. What is something you did as a child that would probably shock or amaze your grandkids today?

  7. Tell us about a person who quietly shaped your faith without ever preaching a sermon.

  8. If your life with God were a picture in a photo album, which moment would you put on the cover?

  9. Share a story of a mistake you made that God later turned into a blessing.

  10. What is a family tradition from your childhood that you wish we would bring back or reimagine today?

  11. Tell us about a time you gave something up for someone else and discovered unexpected joy.

  12. If you could pass on one “secret” for walking with Jesus through hard times, what story would you tell to explain it?

  13. Describe a place that felt holy to you growing up, even if it was very ordinary.

  14. What is a story about money—having little or having plenty—where you clearly saw God provide?

  15. If your grandchildren could “visit” one moment in your life as invisible guests, which moment would you choose for them and what would you hope they’d notice?
