Pilgrims: A Message for the Season

It is in remembering God’s Hand in the lives of our forefathers, that we are strengthened and inspired to fulfill His purpose in our own lives and pass His vision on to the next generation.

Last Sunday I spoke about the Pilgrims at our church, heavily referencing original source documents including:

  • the Wampanoag Version of the 23rd Psalm,
  • their prayer upon arriving in America,
  • their attitude toward difficulties as documented in Bradford’s, Of Plimoth Plantation, America’s first literary classic and the authoritative account of the pilgrims
  • and much more.

Discover how the pilgrims met the threat of famine with the call to a day of prayer and fasting that God used to bring about His purpose–and the Pilgrims’–for the founding of America.

Some of the Pilgrims we met included:

  • William Bradford (disowned at the age of 14),
  • William Brewster (smuggled onto the Mayflower in a keg),
  • Pastor Robinson (who, like Moses, never stepped foot on the Promised Land, America),
  • Squanto (whose village was wiped out by smallpox, and threatened his people saying that if they didn’t do what he wanted, he could have the Pilgrims release the plague on them, which he claimed they were holding in storage pits.)

Several people mentioned that the message helped them “connect the dots” as it filled in missing gaps in their understanding of the Pilgrims, our founding Fathers, and how their story, like the Bible, is relevant to us today.

The Pilgrims as Stepping Stones challenging us to follow in their steps as well as those of Jesus and the disciples, Moses and Elijah.

God may have given you a vision that you are unable to fulfill in your lifetime just as our forefathers were given. Remember the pilgrims. Remember the disciples. Remember our Stepping-stones. Become a stepping-stone.

You are welcome to listen to the message on YouTube. It was recorded after it was presented at church. You are sure to learn something about the Pilgrims if you listen to it.
